Here's a classic case of the music press blowing an off-hand comment way out of proportion. When Grinderman played Victoria, Australia's Meredith Music Festival on December 10, frontman Nick Cave told the crowd, "That's it for Grinderman. It's over," prompting just about everyone to assume the band had broken up. Well, Grinderman drummer Jim Sclavunos has now clarified that they haven't actually called it quits just yet.
Speaking with FasterLouder [via Consequence of Sound], the timekeeper explained, "What happened at Meredith was more a bye-bye than an announcement. An announcement would be like a press release but who knows what will happen in five or 10 years time. My crystal ball is a bit low on batteries at the moment so I can't predict what the future of Grinderman is -- if there is a future."
In other words, Grinderman currently have no plans to play again, but they haven't ruled anything out. So what will they be doing instead of recording Grinderman 3? According to Sclavunos, "We were finished with what we had to do as Grinderman and it's time to move on, for now at least, and the next thing we are moving onto is the Bad Seeds."
After that, the musicians may return to Grinderman or possibly move on to a different project. The band's Warren Ellis, for one, will be returning to his much-missed Dirty Three for a new album in 2012.
"I don't think there should be mourning or rending of garments just yet, let's wait a few years and see what happens," the drummer said. "Grinderman was one of my favourite bands to play with and yes I'm sad to see it go, but there's always the prospect of the dreaded come back tour."
Fair enough. Until then, let's all try to have some restraint and not make any hasty claims before an official announcement arrives.
