Irish songwriter Foy Vance has been on the scene for the better part of seven years, but his stock keeps on rising thanks to a deal with the esteemed Glassnote Records. That label will release his album Joy of Nothing on August 27, and it's available to stream ahead of time on Exclaim.ca.
The collection's sound reflects the years Vance spent in the American South as a child. His songs have a folk rock bent, with acoustic guitar strumming and pianos laying the foundation for his earthy, slightly gruff croon. Roots music veteran Bonnie Raitt shows up to lend her vocals to the quietly hop-skipping "You and I."
But Vance also strives for something more dramatic than straightforward folk music. The title track bears orchestral trances and features choral-style harmonies. The lush vocals return on "Feel for Me," while the near six-minute closer "Guiding Light" swells to cinematically reverent climax.
Check it out below.
In support of the album, Vance has a North American tour lined up. Over here you can check out all the dates, which include a few in Canada.
