How cool would it be if producer/composer Jon Brion had his own musical variety show? That almost happened in 1999 or 2000, when director Paul Thomas Anderson pitched the idea to VH1. He even filmed a pilot for The Jon Brion Show featuring Elliott Smith as the guest, and that episode has now hit the web in full.
Brion and Smith play a number of Smith originals, plus some covers like John Lennon's "Jealous Guy," the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," and Big Star's "Nighttime." They are joined by pianist Brad Mehldau for part of the stripped-down acoustic set.
Parts of this and other performances from The Jon Brion Show have previously emerged online before. See more at the Jon Brion fan site.
