Dirty Beaches

'Hotel'

On top of two full albums' worth of material, the Japanese edition of Dirty Beaches' Drifters/Love Is the Devil also included a four-song bonus disc of piano instrumentals. In case you hadn't already snagged the import, pressed by Big Love Records, Alex Zhang Hungtai has now issued the EP online as Hotel.

The minimalist quickie release was apparently half-conceived at hotels around Europe that had a piano in the lobby, which Hungtai would fiddle with before getting the stink-eye from employees and guests.

"Sometimes at night around 3 or 4 a.m. when I can't sleep, I would sneak downstairs and play the piano and record bits and pieces of ideas onto my cellphone," Hungtai said in a statement. "Of course, there were many times I was caught and was asked to leave and stop disturbing the other guests that were sleeping, and it was quite embarrassing..."

The songs were later fleshed out in Montreal during the Drifters sessions, and you can hear the pensive and pretty results down below.

As previously reported, Dirty Beaches will be touring North America this fall, with Canadian dates lined up in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. You can see the details over here.
