David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars came out in 1972, meaning that the seminal glam rock masterpiece is turning 40 this year. You know what that means: it's time for another anniversary edition, whether fans want it or not. This 40th anniversary reissue will come out on June 5 through EMI.
This reissue will be available in two different versions: a standard CD containing the remastered album and a limited-edition vinyl pressing that comes with a bonus DVD. This audio-only DVD contains the original album, plus 5.1 surround sound mixes of all 11 songs. There are also previously unreleased mixes of non-LP cuts "The Superman," "Velvet Goldmine" and "Sweet Head," plus an instrumental version of "Moonage Daydream."
The remastering was done by original mastering engineer Ray Staff and original co-producer Ken Scott. That's cool and all, but is it really necessary considering how many times Ziggy Stardust has already been reissued? After all, the 30th anniversary version came with a second CD containing 12 bonus tracks, complete with a hard-book case and loads of photos and essays. So this standard CD version seems a little meagre in comparison.
As for the vinyl, you can already find reasonably priced copies of Ziggy Stardust in pretty much any record store around. And the surround sound version has also been released before, meaning that this 40th anniversary version really doesn't offer Bowie fans much in the way of new goodies (unless you really need to hear those new masters).
