Courtney Barnett

"Close Watch" (John Cale cover)

With Record Store Day having come and gone once again, a series of what we expected to be wax-only exclusives have steadily been making their way online.

For instance, Australian artist Courtney Barnett issued a two-song 7-inch highlighting Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit's "Kim's Caravan," and now the B-side's cover of John Cale's "Close Watch" can be streamed in the digital world.

Cale had issued the song as a symphonic slow-burner on 1975's Helen of Troy and as a more muted piano excursion on 1982's Music For a New Society. Barnett's low-key redo hedges closer to the latter, focusing mostly on spacious acoustic strums, a tasteful sprig of pedal steel and intimate, mouth-to-the-mic vocals. She flips the tune's familiar "I keep a close watch on this heart if mine" in a most aching way.
