Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto Unveil 'Flumina'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 11, 2011

It's been four years since boundary-pushing composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and ambient great Christian Fennesz collaborated on the "inspiring" Cendre, itself the follow-up to their 2005 EP Sala Santa Cecilia, but the pair recently got back together for a third collaborative outing called Flumina.

While the record was released in Japan back in August, the collaboration will be released in our part of the world on December 6 via Touch.

Sakamoto began working on the material that ultimately became Flumina on a recent tour, opening each night with a piano piece played in a different key. After 24 performances, the musician had improvisations and compositions that fit all 24 steps of the Western tonal system, which he then sent to his pal Fennesz.

Like their previous work together, soundscaper Fennesz added touches of guitar, synthesizers and other electronic flourishes before the pair met up in New York to mix the record together. You can check out the tracklist below and the album art above.
