Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu — former member of K-pop band Exo and a supremely popular and high-profile solo artist in China — has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by a Beijing court for three rapes committed in 2020 and an additional assault that took place in 2018.

As reported by the Associated Press, the Chaoyang District court ruled that the singer and actor raped three women at his home in 2020 after supplying them with alcohol to the point that they could no longer consent. Nearly 12 of Wu's 13-year sentence — to be carried out in China — is due to that incident, though he's also been sentenced to an additional year and 10 months for the "crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity," alluding to a 2018 assault in which he "gathered a crowd" in order to assault two women.

Wu will be deported following the completion of his sentence; a Canadian diplomat was reportedly in court to hear the sentencing.

Wu was also fined 600 million yuan (approximately $112 million CAD) for evading taxes by underreporting his earnings from performances, advertisements and other sources of income. Prior to his rape charges, Wu was a brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Porsche and L'Oréal.

Wu has been detained since August 2021 while an investigation into the rape and assault allegations was underway.
