The Charlatans To Give Away New Album For Free - No Strings Attached

BY Cam LindsayPublished Oct 1, 2007

The Charlatans have announced plans to release their tenth album free, as a download via English radio station XFM as well as the band's website Thecharlatans.net some time next year. The album, which is currently being mixed, will be preceded by first single, "You Cross My Path," which will be up on Xfm.co.uk to download from October 22 onward.

XFM is currently playing the new single, and on October 4 will premiere interviews with the band's manager, former Creation Records founder Alan McGee, on the station's "Music Response" program.

In response to this new venture for the band, McGee told XFM: "Why would you volunteer to join the army for ten years unless you had no choice? Record companies are kind of like the army - very regulated. We were really excited when XFM got behind us and were as enthusiastic about the download as we are. They are the first people to embrace music for the people. The band will get paid by more people coming to gigs, buying merchandise, publishing and sync fees. I believe it's the future business model."
