Cass McCombs Collects Rarities for 'A Folk Set Apart'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 13, 2015

California singer-songwriter Cass McCombs has been releasing records for the last decade, but he's now revealed plans to share a little insight into his musical history with a compilation of rarities. Going by the title A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., the new record is due out on December 11 via Domino Records.

The collection features 19 songs recorded between 2003 and 2014. Including five unreleased tracks and an array of previously hard to find cuts from a smattering of international independent labels and rare 7-inches only available at shows, the new release features "varying moments of reflection, madness, and dark humour."

"Evangeline" and "Night of the World" come from old split singles with the Meat Puppets, while "Three Men Sitting on a Hollow Log" came from a 7-inch release with Michael Hurley and "If You Loved Me Before" appeared on a team-up single with White Magic.

Going further than just sharing slabs of wax with different artists, McCombs's freshly unearthed songs also roped in collaborators like Mike Gordon of Phish ("Texas"), Tim Dewit and Dutch E. Germ on "A.Y.D.," Joe Russo of Further ("Evangeline, "Night of the World"), Chris Cohen of Deerhoof ("Poet's Day," "An Other") and Ligament drummer Tim Cedar ("Twins").

The set will arrive as a 19-song CD and 11-track LP (with 8 digital bonus tracks), and you can see the full tracklisting below. Beyond that, hit play to hear "Evangeline."
