New wave rockers the Cars have ended a lengthy hiatus to begin work on their first proper album in 23 years.
The reunion news comes after the group leaked a brief clip of a new song called "Blue Tip" on their Facebook page last week. Now Billboard confirms that the reunited Cars are currently working on new material in a New York-based studio.
The original group disbanded in 1988. In 1997, frontman Ric Ocasek even told reporters that a reunion would never happen. Guitarist Elliot Easton and keyboardist Greg Hawkes reformed as the New Cars in 2005, touring and releasing a live album called It's Alive in 2006.
Hawkes is now writing and recording all the bass parts, as original bassist Benjamin Orr died of cancer in 2000. The Ocasek-led group are rounded out by drummer David Robinson.
The upcoming Cars album does not have a release date or title, but the members have hinted that the reunion will also include a full North American tour.
