The folks over at Captured Tracks clearly have an affection for decades-old indie pop and post-punk, since the Brooklyn label has reissued music from the likes of the Wake, Cleaners from Venus and the Monochrome Set in recent years. Now, Captured Tracks has teamed with iconic New Zealand imprint Flying Nun for a series of reissues.
The two labels will jointly release out-of-print titles from Flying Nun's back catalogue. These date back to the '80s and early '90s, and include prominent releases and obscure gems. The campaign will include box sets, LPs, 12-inch EPs and 7-inches, plus merch items like posters and shirts.
First up is a double-LP compilation from the short-lived Toy Love, a pop- and punk-oriented New Zealand band that featured Flying Nun hero Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate (who later began Tall Dwarfs), as well as Paul Kean (who went on to play with the Bats). This self-titled collection, which was mastered for vinyl directly form the analogue tapes, originally came out overseas through Real Groovy Records in 2012 and will now get a proper North American release on February 19. In a statement, Captured Tracks founder Mike Sniper explained that the idea for the partnership was sparked when Flying Nun founder Roger Shepherd bought back his label's right from Warner Bros. in 2009.
Sniper said, "We at Captured Tracks are beyond ecstatic to work with Flying Nun Records for this series of reissues. As a young record collector, I always saw the label as a recommendation of quality and a constant source of inspiration. I would comb the shelves of every record store imaginable to secure anything and everything I could find. When I first heard the news that they'd bought back the rights, this partnership was something that was lingering in the back of my mind. I'm more than pleased that we can have any sort of involvement in revitalizing this amazing back catalog and returning it to record shelves the world over."
Flying Nun's catalogue includes releases from classic indie pop acts like the Chills, the Clean, Tall Dwarfs, the Bats and more, so there is plenty of exciting material for the labels to draw from. Stay tuned for news about the upcoming reissues.
