Fredericton-based band Brookside Mall are set to make their debut with an EP entitled Young Champion next week, but Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive early listen to their inaugural offering right now.
The four-song set was recorded this winter with Chris MacLean at All in the Mind studio in the band's hometown, and hears the group channelling musical influences like Beach House, Majical Cloudz and the National into a blend of shoegaze-y dream pop of their own. Striking a balance between melody and tension, Brookside mall bring together gleaming guitars, glimmering synths and peppy rhythms to strike outside the box of standard indie rock.
Opening with "April Showers," moving through "Scarlet Letter" and "Months," and then closing out on "Palindrome," the EP tracks the band's movement through "four distinct expressions of time and distance" — and you can follow along on that journey right now.
Young Champion is out on March 11 through Front Porch Records, but you can hear it in its entirety a whole week early by hitting play below.
