1. Lost in Translation (Directed by Sophia Coppola)
Most thought-provoking film I have seen in a very long time. Seductive velvety cinematography and beautiful characters. Mesmerising Tokyo neon cityscape nightlife. Allison Green, Victoria BC

A sad but funny film. This film doesn't beat you over the head the way most American comedies do. It's more subtle. Steve Bowd, Vancouver BC

All is forgiven for Godfather III. Ryan Petsche, Pointe Claire QC

Excellent chemistry throughout the cast, and overall all the different elements of the flick gel together so well. Definite contender for Oscar for best film. Jimmy Vie, Toronto ON

Awe-inspiring cityscapes and an excellent mood-making soundtrack. This is a movie where on the surface it seems like not much is happening but peel away the layers and it's saying a lot. Great juxtaposition between the two leads, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannsen. Jeff Purmalis, Toronto ON

Finally a romantic comedy that brilliantly avoids all of the genre's clichés — Sofia Coppola has arrived. Forget her performance in The Godfather, Part III. All is forgiven! Thierry Côté, Ottawa ON

One of the most touching stories in a long time. Not sappy though. Both of the main characters carry their share of humanity (with their flaws and doubts). A friendship, a moment where two lives meet, and it's gone. Dominic Sauvageau, Montreal QC

This was a great year for exciting works, but this small and slow movie had an effect on me unlike all the others. Simply beautiful filmmaking. Wayne Paquette, Edmonton AB

Not only the most beautiful film released this year, but also the funniest and the smartest. Phil Bardach, Toronto ON

Sofia Coppola may not be the first writer-director to see the sad-nobility present in Bill Murray, but when she does strike that chord, it reverberates through her creation. Scarlett Johansson is timelessly beautiful in everything she does in this film — she has access to such a well of emotion seemingly without even trying that it is hard to believe she is as young as she is. Thomas Dorey, Winnipeg MB

2. Kill Bill Vol. 1 (Directed by Quentin Tarantino)
Quentin Tarantino finally gets out of his hermit mode! Helene Munk, Windsor ON

Excellent homage to the great Japanese and Chinese kung fu cult flicks from the ‘70s. Heavily stylised and includes a vast number of elements and cliches from these films mixed with that trademark Tarantino touch. Andreas Jensen, Grand Forks ND

Uma Thurman killing over hundred people with a sword. Colour me satiated. Ben Wass, Brooklyn NY

Tarantino's best movie of all. Not perfect, but damn close! Daniel Tervoort, Winnipeg MB

This movie has everything a girl could want. Fighting scenes, cool sfx, lots of blood, lots of fancy martial art tricks, great directing, and to top it off a great soundtrack. Oh and Lucy Lui cut off the head of a guy! Janice Tran, Calgary AB

Quentin Tarantino takes a victory lap around the track with this one. While all the Pulp Fiction copycat directors are already washed up (i.e., Guy Richie) Tarantino re-invents his style, or maybe his style re-invents the style. Daniel Sylvester, Tecumseh ON

This is the closest to turntablism a movie can get. Sample heavy, with influences on the sleeve. Jordy Lebel, Lacombe AB

Ultraviolence at its finest and best soundtrack since Pulp Fiction. Mark Oatway, London ON

Who knew multiple beheadings could be so damn funny? It's a case of a homage actually outshining the genre. Ben Joseph, Toronto ON

3. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Directed by Peter Jackson)
Epic in every way. Dimitri Antonakis, Brandon MB

A movie that everyone anticipated all year long. Josh Kyrzakos, Mississauga ON

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Directed by Gore Verbinski)
It has pirates. What other movie had pirates? Kevin Dunne, Greenfield Park QC

About time they made a film like that! Christina Hebb, Chalk River ON

Johnny Depp is hilarious in his Liverpool accent. Rosemary Breschuk-Chiu, Newmarket ON

5. Finding Nemo (Directed by Andrew Stanton)
Funny, happy and good to watch with chicks. Jeff Lockwood, Vancouver BC

Great graphics and story. Matt Nash, Stoney Creek ON

Great movie for children with a disability, as well as for adults! Bobbi Jo Panciera, Winnipeg MB

I know, I know. It was a cartoon. There's something about a shark in aversion therapy. Kevin MacDonald, Toronto, ON
