Bella Clava, a clever play on the technical name for ski masks (balaclava), is a quality choice for the Toronto-based band's moniker. On their 2014 offering Medicine for Melancholy, their rock'n'roll sneaks up on you —something their namesake could aid in — before embedding its hooky tunes in your head.
Fronted by Caitlin Dacey, the band's performances are no less enthralling, which is why Exclaim! TV caught up with the four-piece at the Horseshoe Tavern for a live session of "Broken Spirit."
The impressive performance sounds similar to the studio version of this subdued, but occasionally explosive, grungy rocker. Watch as members of the band sway (Dacey), pace (bassist Scott Hannigan), do their best drummer faces (obviously drummer Jody Brummell) or focus on playing a double-neck guitar (Steve Suttie) in this captivating clip.
As of right now, the band's only booked appearance is a free show at Yonge and Dundas Square on August 29, with other bands to be announced.
Until then, tide yourself over by watching Bella Clava perform "Broken Spirit" in the player below.
