Despite erecting billboards (that ended up just promoting new gear) to tease fans, the ever-elusive Aphex Twin hasn't released new music since 2018's Collapse — until now. The Irish electronic musician born Richard D. James has announced an EP, led by the release of his first official new single in five years, "Blackbox Life Recorder 21f."

Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760 arrives July 28 via Warp.

Last week, Aphex Twin performed for the first time since 2019 at Sónar 2023 in Barcelona, where he instructed fans to "LOOK OUT FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL IN SONAR +D PROJECT AREA AND AT THE MERCH DESK" via Twitter. Likewise, posters with QR codes — leading to an augmented reality app called YXBoZXh0d2lu — were reportedly put up around Los Angeles yesterday (June 20), according to Pitchfork. Scanning the codes into the app is said to activate brief snippets of music and animation.

European Aphex fans can catch him live at a handful of additional festival performances this summer, including a headlining set at London's Field Day festival in August.
