After self-releasing their debut EP in 2008, Hamilton, ON's DIY rockers Young Rival are back, and this time have teamed up with acclaimed Toronto record-maker Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, Fucked Up) for their first proper full-length.
The band - praised for their ability to be dark and melodic while uncompromising their garage-rockin', Dave Davies-esque sound - recorded the album in one room, with one high ceiling and microphones scattered throughout, apparently to ensure the group's live energy and big sound would be captured.
"As a band, our greatest strength has been in our ability to impress people with our live show," says vocalist Aron D'Alesio. "Our shows are about entertainment. We gravitate towards the songs we have the most fun playing. That means people can expect a high energy show with a few interesting twists and turns that show some of our diversity."
Indeed, Young Rival have been commended for their live shows, specifically their performance at this year's North by Northeast festival. Exclaim! didn't give it the most glowing review, but hey, others loved it, saying they "rocked us so hard we peed our pants."
The band will be touring Canada the rest of the summer and through the fall, road-testing the recently completed album, which is currently without a title or a firm release date.
