Morrissey Debuts New Song About Manchester Arena Bombing

"Bonfire of Teenagers" is the title track from his forthcoming solo album

Morrissey is in the midst of his Viva Moz Vegas residency this month, and he's been using the Caesars Palace stay as an opportunity to debut new music from his forthcoming new album Bonfire of Teenagers — whose title was apparently inspired by something much darker than you might expect.

At a performance last week, the controversial former Smiths frontman explained that the album's title track is "about England's 9/11," the bombing of the Manchester Arena at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017. "Obviously in jolly old England, most people won't talk about it — but I will," Morrissey said in a moment of rare self-awareness.

The songs lyrics boorishly reference the British city's collective mourning in the wake of the attack, when Oasis's "Don't Look Back in Anger" became an anthem of solidarity among Mancunians: "And the silly people sing 'Don't Look Back in Anger' / And the morons sing and sway: 'Don't Look Back in Anger' / I can assure you I will look back in anger till the day I die," Moz sings.

The song follows a female fan attending the concert, who is later described as "vaporized." Elsewhere in the track, Morrissey repeats the line, "Go easy on the killer."
