Exclaim! New Faves alumna Cots — the solo project of Steph Yates — has shared a visual accompaniment for "Sun-Spotted Apple," from her debut album Disturbing Body, which arrived this summer via Boiled Records.
The Montreal/Guelph composer shot the ethereal video in record time with the help of numerous friends. "I made this video with my friends Jade Perry, Sara and Emma Bortolon-Vettor, Emma Howarth-Withers and Alanna Gurr. We shot it in one evening in my garden in Guelph," Yates shared in a press release. "Jade coordinated the outfits and we dreamt up a series of vignettes to unfold over the course of the song — leaving ample room for improvisation and behind-the-scenes tomfoolery."
Creativity abounds throughout the inventive video, as it plays out like a film-school project. That is not to say it's amateur by any means, but rather is elevated by the DIY nature, making it all the more impressive. One particularly arresting scene uses a translucent plastic sheet and back-lighting to cast a figure in silhouette as they extend an apple towards Yates' outstretched hand.
In addition to today's release, Yates will also share a gentler, Sandro Perri-produced "Silver Apple" version of the track tomorrow (November 30). For the alternate version, Yates pulls off the impossible — the song becomes even more tender.
She explained: "This was recorded live in-studio with guitar, voice, bass, and keys (unlike the album version where the guitar was divided into two parts that could be hard-panned). I knew I wanted to share this version at some point. I like its spaciousness and how the parts seem to move along more delicately."
Yates recently wrapped up a tour throughout Ontario supporting fellow Canadian artist Tim Baker. So all in all, Cots is on the come up.
