Carrie Fisher, the veteran actress best known for portraying Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, has died at the age of 60.

Today (December 27), Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd released a statement to People confirming her mother's passing.

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," the statement said. "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

Last week, Fisher went into cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles. People on the flight administered CPR to her, and she was rushed to a hospital upon landing.

In addition to the Star Wars franchise, Fisher had a long and illustrious career. Most recently, she was a regular in the hit British comedy Catastrophe.
