Wolverine

The Window Purpose

BY Laura TaylorPublished Jun 1, 2005

Filling in the gap between new albums, this release of The Window Purpose is a reissue of Wolverine’s first full-length, revamped with new artwork and a bonus track ("Again!”). Originally limited in production and distribution, The Window Purpose was easily overlooked the first time around, and it’s interesting to hear the precursor to last year’s Cold Light of Monday. The progressive elements are stronger on this earlier album — more emphasis on technical prowess and less on brooding atmosphere. It’s a less powerful package, well-executed but often lacking the subtle beauty of the more recent record. Except for the death metal growls on a couple of tracks, The Window Purpose might be more to the taste of prog purists, as the album’s lengthy songs provide numerous opportunities for exploration and experimentation.
