Montreal outfit Wake Island recently toured Europe and the Middle East, and while in Lebanon, they recorded a new tune called "Submarine," which they are now premiering on Exclaim.ca.
The song is a moody art-rock cut, which simmers and shimmers before building up with pounding crescendos and spiky guitar riffs. It's the group's first material since this year's It Takes Time to Be Uncomfortable album and Use It As a Weapon // Uncomfortable B-Sides EP.
Vocalist/keyboardist Philippe Manasseh — one of two Wake Island members who hails from Lebanon — said in a statement, "Our presence in Lebanon was very politically and personally charged this time, and we felt the repercussions of the regional and Syrian tensions pretty much everywhere. On one hand, there was a strange feeling of denial going on, a sort of bubble that people in Lebanon put themselves in to shield from constant worry; and on the other hand, we saw a great exaggeration of the situation from the big news media, that was actually fuelling worries, mostly from people living abroad."
