You know you're onto something good when an album kicks off with a jam as dope as All Nation's 2009 raw gospel funk barnstormer "His Spoke," followed by Floyd Lawson & the Hearts of Stones' punishing, frenzied 1975 take on MFSB's "Kay Gee." The remainder of the fifth volume of Let's Boogaloo doesn't disappoint. Compiled by Jazzman Records founder and DJ Gerald Short, Boogaloo is a relentless platter of deep funk, Northern soul, mod-era R&B gems, lo-fi contemporary funk and most notably, Latin funk. "Funky Puggin" by the Soul Fantastics is an irresistibly deep funk jam that kicks ass with a throbbing bass and a punchy drum and conga break. You'll wish it were longer than three minutes. Bermuda's the Invaders represent with psychedelic, horn-powered instrumental "Spacing Out." Looking to ignite a party this summer? Check out Let's Boogaloo Vol. 5.
