After years of VHS bootlegs and too rare television screenings, the uncut version of 1964's legendary concert film The T.A.M.I. Show finally sees an official DVD release, and it was well worth the wait. Featuring the likes of the Rolling Stones, James Brown and the Flames, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Lesley Gore, the Supremes and the Beach Boys (whose long removed segment is finally restored here), amongst others, every one is top-notch. Reportedly upset about the Stones closing the show, Brown delivers a performance of astonishing impact. It's no wonder that his "Please, Please, Me" helped cement his iconic status and that the Stones were hesitant to follow, yet they prove themselves with the raw and soulful "Time Is On My Side." It's also poignant to see a young Marvin Gaye with the affable charm of "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," as well as a pre-breakdown Brian Wilson on the lovely "Surfer Girl." Chuck Berry and Smokey Robinson are at the top of their game. It's also of major historical importance to note that this interracial show took place shortly after the passage of The Civil Rights Act of 1964. Featuring commentary by director Steve Binder, a trailer with commentary by John Landis and an exhaustively researched commemorative, fact-filled booklet, The T.A.M.I Show is a blast of edutainment.
