Ulcer

Grant Us Death

I can't stop thinking of this band being grating black metal, but that's only because I think of Ulver whenever I see their moniker. Ulcer are from Poland and play barbaric death metal, Swedish style. This is their second full-length (Serpent Trinity came out back in 2007 and featured a very telling mid-era Entombed cover) and the band have the sound nailed: chainsaw guitars, attitude somewhere between angry hardcore and raging death metal, and an obvious love for both no-bones classic Swedeath and plenty-o'-bones Wolverine Blues-era (and beyond) Entombed. Warts? Someone culling influences from Entombed, post-Wolverine Blues. But that's the charm of this thing — the clashing of vibes ending up back in a death metal sweet spot that, oddly and frustratingly, Entombed themselves struggle to get to half the time these days.
