Thyrane

Hypnotic

BY Laura TaylorPublished Aug 1, 2003

Despite the overused album title, Thyrane is neither very hypnotic, nor totally generic. Hypnotic is the band’s third full-length (first available through Century Media), an onslaught of industrio-metal electricity that could pass for the bastard child of a union between …And Oceans and Dark Tranquillity. You need to like the sound of a synthesiser to get into this one, because when the keyboard is playing it’s at the front of the mix, and in an odd contrast, the blackened vocals are buried in amongst everything else. Outside of the unexpected Middle Eastern interlude, there’s not a lot of subtlety to Hypnotic — it’s all in your face, straightforward melody and aggression. Thyrane offer a lot of energy without presenting much of a listening challenge.
