"Bury 3 Dynamos"

TRACK OF THE DAY: With a trimmer new line-up, Montreal's Silver Mt. Zion have returned with a daunting new song that, once again, serves as an invigorating reconstruction of folk and rock idioms with punk spirit.

Ahead of the February 16 release of their sixth powerful full-length, Kollaps Tradixionales, "Bury 3 Dynamos" demonstrates how this SMZ quintet are as potent a force as any of the band's previous multi-headed configurations. The interplay between Efrim Menuck's sinister guitar tones and the strings of Sophie Trudeau, Jessica Moss and Thierry Amar conjures a wondrously beautiful noise that's propelled by the cacophonous din raised by new drummer David Payant.

As always, the unique rhythm of Menuck's vocal phrasing bends and blurs language, infusing thoughtful lyrics with an unhinged urgency. But, with traces of "Greensleeves" and/or "Scarborough Fair" drifting throughout, "Bury 3 Dynamos" is an unsteadily mesmerizing piece that builds with dynamic authority.
