Sultan

Yoshitoshi Montreal

BY Ashley HampsonPublished Sep 19, 2007

Montreal DJ/producer Sultan has established himself both locally and internationally since gaining a reputation in the house scene in 2000. A key figure in the Canadian DJ scene, Sultan is one of the biggest names in house to roll out of Montreal and has appeared on countless international compilations, including Tiesto’s In Search of Sunrise 4 and Deep Dish’s George Is On, featuring Deep Dish vs. Dire Straits’ "Flashing For Money (Sultan Club/Radio Mix),” which earned praise from Dire Straits, as well as the electronic scene, for being the world’s first legally cleared remix/mash-up. Riding on Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi Recordings, Yoshitoshi Montreal is Sultan’s first-ever solo compilation, which sees the artist incorporating original material, solid remixes and track mash-ups from various artists. The album’s highlights include "Aidan,” an original track by Sultan and Ned Shepard with an addictive rolling bass loop, and closing track "Night Visions,” a remix of the Sultan classic with a dreary, melancholic vibe. Yoshitoshi Montreal moves with ease through high-energy house, spirals down into progressive and slowly peters out into down-tempo while paying tribute to the city where the Sultan got his start.
