In its 24 years as an independent label, Sub Pop Records has worked with artists that fall under many genre tags, from grunge, indie rock and punk to country, stand-up comedy and world music. Now, the legendary label will be looking to make its mark on the world of hip-hop, as it has announced the signing of Shabazz Palaces.

Shabazz Palaces are a Seattle, WA-based hip-hop project helmed by Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, a founding member of legendary group Digable Planets. Butler self-released the Of Light and Shabazz Palaces EPs in 2009, to critical acclaim. The group's debut LP is expected in early 2011.

In a statement, Sub Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman took to abbreviation. "It's in the initials," he said. "We SPs need to stick together - and we do. Seattle is our home and that means a lot to both parties. And we're not stopping at both parties, our professional collaboration will undoubtedly inspire many more parties, with some choice SP music as the soundtrack. To put it more prosaically - but no less sincerely - we at SP are honored, humbled and psyched to have been given the responsibility of further introducing the world to the music of SP."
