Sonic Youth Launch Live Archive Online
They're also selling off gear and memorabilia from the 'Daydream Nation' era and beyond
Published Oct 24, 2018Sonic Youth have unveiled a new online archive featuring some of the band's most memorable live shows, in addition to revealed plans to sell off some of their classic gear and memorabilia.
For the live archive, SY have made audio footage from six career-spanning shows available to stream through nugs.net.
"Through the years and as the times changed we recorded our live shows as often as we could, on cassettes, DATs, CD-Rs and later on multi-track recorders," drummer Steve Shelley said in a statement. "We collected fan-generated audience tapes, shady bootlegs and anything we could get our hands on. We now maintain an archive of hundreds of hours of Sonic Youth concerts and we'd like to share some of our favorites, often from the best uncirculated source possible via nugs.net."
The initial list of concerts available to stream consists of shows from November 5, 1988, at Cabaret Metro in Chicago; December 13, 1988, at CBGB in New York; August 17, 2002, at Metro in Chicago; August 22, 2007, at ABC1 in Glasgow; October 21, 2009, at Columbiahalle in Berlin; and August 12, 2011, at Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn.
The ABC1 gig in Glasgow also features video footage.
More concerts are expected to be added eventually. Head over here to check out the initial offerings.
Meanwhile, Sonic Youth are also commemorating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album Daydream Nation this year by opening up the Sonic Youth Reverb shop on October 30. It features more than 200 pieces of gear from the studio and tours between 1988 and 2011, as well as posters, photos and other memorabilia. Numerous test pressings will also be available.
