Led by Quebec-born, Nova Scotia-raised popsmith Marc-Antoine Robertson, SoHo Ghetto are set to release their debut LP Thou or I or Both next week, but you can stream it in advance right now at Exclaim.ca.
Influenced by Robertson's love of '80s and '90s soundtracks, and conveying universal feelings about friends, family, love and existential yearning, there's no shortage of theatrical moments on the new record.
The album was produced by Daniel Ledwell (who has previously worked with Jenn Grant) and goes for grandiosity, despite being composed from the frontman's Halifax bedroom. It features angsty pop songs that are, according to a press release, "bathed in the purple and pink studio lights of the early days of music video television." The nostalgic vibe is pulled off through Roberton's falsetto, backed by Casio keyboards and drum machines — but rather than lo-fi bedroom shoegaze, the result is a dramatic collection of unabashedly poppy songs.
Aimed to make listeners sing along, pick up an air guitar and rock their feathered hair, there's no need to be afraid of an all-out homage to hair metal; the tracks on Thou or I or Both are much more nuanced and listenable.
SoHo Ghetto will independently release Thou or I or Both on August 26, but you can listen to the group's debut album in its entirety right now in the player below.
Tour dates:
09/17-21 Montreal, QC - Pop Montreal
09/26 Halifax, NS - The Seahorse
09/27 Sydney, NS - The Fox Den
10/03 Fredericton, NB - The Capital
10/04 Moncton, NB - Plan B
