Snail Mail — a.k.a. Lindsey Jordan — has announced the follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut album Lush. Her sophomore album, Valentine, will arrive on November 5 via Matador. The news arrives alongside a video for the title track and a tour announcement.
Jordan wrote Lush — which landed on Exclaim!'s list of the top 20 pop and rock albums of 2018 — when she was just 17 and was rightfully deemed a prodigal wunderkind. In 2019, she reissued her preliminary Habit EP. Now, at 22, the singer-songwriter has teamed up with co-producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee) for her heavily anticipated sophomore record.
"I wanted to take as much time as possible with this record to make sure I was happy with every detail before unleashing it unto y'all," Jordan said in a statement. "Referring to the process as the deepest level of catharsis and therapy I have ever experienced would be a huge understatement. Valentine is my child!"
Lead single and title track "Valentine" indicates a near-immediate sense of evolution, with Jordan's lo-fi whispery vocals and eerie synths exploding into a massive guitar-driven chorus — the artist taking up more sonic space than ever before with smouldering intensity as she snarls, "So why'd you want to erase me?"
In the baroque Josh Coll-directed video clip, things get pretty bloody. Jordan shared that she and the director connected over a mutual interest in "the intersection between terror and devastating beauty," which is present in full force.
The artist has also announced a lengthy tour in support of the record. Kicking off this November in Richmond, VA, the trek will bring Jordan to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver in 2022. Snail Mail tour tickets go on sale this Friday (September 17) at 10 a.m. local time here.
