Shad Takes Over Action Bronson's Slot at NXNE

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jun 10, 2015

In the last couple of weeks, NXNE has been mired in controversy, as irate Torontonians protested Action Bronson's scheduled free show at Yonge-Dundas Square on the grounds that the rapper's lyrics convey "violent misogyny." Bronson was eventually booted from the gig, and now NXNE has announced his replacement: Canadian rapper Shad.

Certainly, this is a much less inflammatory choice than Action Bronson, since Shad is known for his family-friendly approach to rap lyricism. The show is taking place on June 21, and previously announced acts Ty Dolla $ign, Casey Veggies and NÜE are still on the bill.

This isn't the first time that Shad has stepped in to fill a previously disgraced position. He recently took over the CBC show Q following Jian Ghomeshi's infamous exit.

NXNE has also filled another recently vacated spot: following White Lung's cancellation of their Canadian dates, they will be replaced by Cold Cave on June 20 at Adelaide Hall. The bill also features Deafheaven, Greys and Programm.

The festival has also detailed some comedy events, which will find Eric Andre, Matt O'Brien, James Hartnett, Ashley Barnhill and others heading to the NXNE Hub.

See the full festival details here. The event runs from June 17 to 21, and performers include the New Pornographers, Rae Sremmurd, Best Coast, Real Estate, Blonde Redhead, Iceage, No Joy, A Place to Bury Strangers, Lower Dens, Vince Stapes and many more.
