Sarah Jarosz

'Undercurrent' (album stream)

BY Eric Noble-MarksPublished Jun 10, 2016

Singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz is set to release her fourth studio album Undercurrent next month on Sugar Hill Records. Before the album officially drops on June 17, you can stream the whole deal here on Exclaim!

The follow-up to 2013's Build Me Up from Bones, Undercurrent marks a departure of sorts for Jarosz, her first record since relocating to New York City from Texas. As a consequence, the record is steeped in Big Apple influence.

"When I visualize this record, I think of the Central Park reservoir, where I spent a lot of time getting inspiration and thinking," revealed Jarosz in a statement. "It was the most focused I had ever been, in terms of trying to write every day and having a grander idea of what I really wanted to write, so I was able to enjoy the process of writing more than ever."

However, Undercurrent was not entirely made in a New York state of mind, infusing Appalachian folk and bluegrass with the country and blues of her home state to create a perfectly modern Americana record.

Jarosz clearly has chops, pairing austere fingerpicked guitar with a distinct voice that pairs plenty of soul with country twang. Highlights include the soaring, slide-guitar flavoured "Back of My Mind" and serene album closer "Jacqueline."
