Sam Smith

"Drowning Shadows"

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 2, 2015

Sam Smith is about to reissue his expanded LP In the Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition. Now, he has rolled out the new track "Drowning Shadows."

The song is a devastatingly melancholic ballad about drinking, loveless romance and lonely confusion. The arrangement places Smith's acrobatic crooning atop resonant piano chords and cinematic orchestrations.

Smith debuted the song on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music. Hear it below. The music is followed by an interview in which the singer calls the tune "Very, very depressing." He explains that it's about deciding whether to go to nightclubs and look for love or go home alone.

In the Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition comes out on November 6 through Capitol Records.
