Back in September, Aurora, ON-based pop rock outfit Ruby Coast announced that they would finally be releasing their long-awaited debut LP in early 2011. At the time, we didn't know any details about the album, including which label would be putting it out. Well, it looks as if the band never settled on a label, since they just self-released it for free via Bandcamp.
The album is called Whatever This Is and it was recorded by Howard Billerman and Brian Paulson at Montreal's Hotel2Tango, a studio that has played host to Canadian indie elite like Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Wolf Parade. The ten songs are both punchy and atmospheric, with reverb-soaked guitars going toe-to-toe with thundering drums and yelping vocals. There are also a number of quirky production touches -- see the curious whistling and clapping into to "Creep Me Out," or the plunky marimba on "Dr. Acula."
Download the whole thing for free over at Bandcamp here, or taken a listen at the bottom of this page. According to a press release, "All they [the band] ask is that you tweet, rep it on Facebook or burn it for a friend if you like it."
Now that the album is finally out, Ruby Coast will be heading out on a Canadian tour in March. A number of the dates with be with Born Ruffians. Scroll past the tracklist to see the schedule.
