Pet Shop Boys' and Brian Eno Collaboration "Fizzled Out"

Published Mar 31, 2009

As Pet Shop Boys bask in the glow of their recently released Yes LP, the Brits have dropped word of quite the drool-worthy collaboration. Apparently, the synth pop pair have been working with none other than legendary super-producer Brian Eno, who recently tried to "humanize" the group's electronics in the studio.

While speaking to the Quietus, Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant explained: "We discovered that Brian Eno was in St. Petersburg, and flew over for a few days and we kept going back. This was when we were planning our musical Closer to Heaven, and we asked if he was interested in producing it.

"We did a day with Brian in the studio, and his idea was to humanize the electronics, which was a good idea, we played keyboards live and it was quite interesting. It all fizzled out, which was a shame really, as we were all quite into it. I think what Brian does is he helps people write songs, and we arrived with 12 songs."

The duo's Chris Lowe added: "We should have turned up with nothing."

And while these particular Eno sessions didn't work out, Pet Shops Boys seemed keen to work with the producer again in the future.

"We always have all these songs, and it'd be an interesting starting point to go with nothing, a blank sheet," Lowe said. "And Brian Eno would definitely be a person to do that with."
