Paulson

Variations

BY Stuart GreenPublished Sep 1, 2004

Somewhere between the spacey fantasy world of Coheed and Cambria and the interesting funk-pop of Incubus sits New Jersey quintet Paulson. Their first full-length is a rich, pulsating melange of synth-saturated prog rock, metallic post-punk and mainstream alt-rock. It’s a combination that works with great effect and impressive results. It’s a refreshing twist on familiar themes and sounds that demands repeated listens to fully appreciate the complexity and depth of the performances and the songs. It also helps to listen to this record through headphones to get the maximum sonic experience.
