Nick Parkin

Island of Dust

BY David LewisPublished Sep 1, 1999

Parkin is a UK drummer heavily into electronics and studio manipulation. His experiments with time, reverse loops and sonic decay share common roots in the pioneering work of Varese, Henry and Stockhausen. After creating sounds like metallic rain in the opening “Culumulus,” Parkin is equally inventive in the sustained drone of “Erebus,” the eerie drift of “Spores,” the atmospheric impressionism of the title track and the intensifying “Mutability.” Sure to fascinate anyone who specialises in the fractal universe and the infinite possibilities of white noise, for the rest of us this heavily processed music amounts to eclectic wallpaper.
