My Epic

I Am Undone

BY Travis PersaudPublished Feb 22, 2009

I Am Undone opens with a gentle piano penning a simple melody, leading to a vocal loop singing, "May it be the real I who speaks/May it be the real Thou that I speak to," quoting C.S. Lewis. That raw honesty sets the tone of this impressive album. Following the path of Thrice and recent tour partners Cool Hand Luke, My Epic display their ability to balance delicate intensity with raw moments of emotion. "Lest We Die" hits hard from the first note, building a swell of guitars before cutting down to quiet noodling, with Aaron Stone's soaring voice filling the void. It's a fairly simple formula but one that they do well - the trio have a clear direction of where they want their songs to go, and they're able to do it without loosing momentum. And even when they cut all distortion and look inward ("It's At Times Like This That I Realize Survival Is Not Enough"), their songwriting, featuring vivid imagery, is enough to draw anyone in.
