Although Moritz Simon Geist isn't the first artist to write music for robots to perform (see Squarepusher's 2014 EP Music for Robots), the Dresden musician is the first to build all of the machines himself.
On his debut, fittingly titled Robotic Electronic Music, Geist teams up with fellow countrymen Mouse of Mars to write and program the music played on each of the LP's eight tracks. Since these numbers are wholly performed by machines, including robotic arms tapping on pint glasses, mechanical buffers running across guitar strings and programmed sticks banging on drum heads, much of the album feels more tactile and (ironically) more organic than your average electronic LP.
But it can also feels more novel, as demonstrated on tracks like the clanging "Gateland" and the industrial "Under Deconstruction." But what makes Robotic Electronic Music so fascinating is how Geist manages to move the LP through clubby house music ("Entropy") to thoughtful musique concrete ("Empathiemaschine").
