Miesha & the Spanks

'Girls, Like Wolves' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 13, 2013

It's been a couple of years since we got a new album from garage-rocking Calgarians Miesha & the Spanks, and that will change on August 20 with the arrival of Girls, Like Wolves via Saved by Vinyl. Before then, you can stream the whole thing at Exclaim.ca.

The disc was recorded over six days at a cabin on the lake in Kananaskis, AB, with Ian Blurton (C'mon, Change of Heart) serving as producer. The result is 10 heavy rock tunes that set Stuart Bota's bashing drums against Meisha Louie's six-string riffs and raw vocals.

Opener "Please Don't Blow" kicks off the album with catchy garage-punk hooks and concise punchiness. Much of the collection follows suit, although the downtempo "Song 10" (which appears as the fifth track, go figure) is a woozy slice of back-masked psychedelia, and the album-closing "Girls, Like Wolves" wraps up the album with a howling instrumental jam.
