Defining themselves as "thinking woman's hard rock" in an online bio, frontwoman Dani Neff expertly guides Megafauna through edgy, guitar-driven music filled with changing time signatures and bluesy solos. Having identified influences such as the Mars Volta, Tool, and King Crimson, it's easy to pinpoint where the band's varied songwriting style originates from.
We invited the Austin, Texas four-piece to the Exclaim! office for a performance of "This Town," taken from their recently released record Maximalist.
Neff starts things off with a quick, overdriven blues lick, her lead playing as agile and precise as ever. The rhythm section of drummer Zack Humphrey and bassist Bryan Wright proceed to join her in crashing fashion before quieting down for Neff's vocal work. A raucous middle section highlights some phenomenal chord changes, with the song closing out on the angular lead guitar riffing.
