Major Lazer had intended to release their long-awaited new album, Free the Universe, back in the fall via Mad Decent/Downtown, but this was later pushed back to this past Tuesday (February 19). Unfortunately, the Diplo-led dancehall act have now let us know that the album has been delayed once again.
The outfit didn't give a specific reason for the delay, but their newly issued statement vaguely explains, "We never want to disappoint our supporters but circumstances out of our control have made us unable to keep the intended date. For anyone disappointed, we are truly apologetic and we promise that this hiccup has only made what we have planned for the album stronger. We tried extremely hard to keep the date but it was ultimately decided that rushing the album would have been unfair to you and everyone who worked so hard on it."
They statement also reads, "The upcoming Major Lazer album, Free the Universe, has been been kidnapped by General Rubbish and we all must embark on an epic journey to upset his evil plan so Major Lazer can free the universe as planned with the album."
It's not entirely clear exactly when the album will finally be out, but a pre-order will launch through iTunes next Tuesday (February 26). Those who order it will instantly receive a digital copy of the new single, "Watch Out for This (Bumaye)."
In the meantime, the group will be releasing three volumes in a collection of rarities and unreleased music called Lazer Strikes Back. Download Vol. 1 for free right here.
Major Lazer will continue with their extensive tour schedule as planned. See the itinerary — which includes Canadian stops in Toronto and Vancouver — here.
