L'Altra Music Of A Sinking Occasion

Like a post-rock Low, Chicago's L'Altra serves up a fascinatingly subtle platter of submerged harmonies and somnambulant vocals on this, their first full-length offering. Its sounds are deceptively simple, but careful listening reveals some complex machinations creating that impression. With pace that rarely speeds up to trot, Music Of A Sinking Occasion risks falling into a rut over the course of a whole album, but L'Altra switches it up with vocals from both Lindsay Anderson and Aesthetics label owner Ken Dyber, as well as consistently changing instrumentation (trumpet, cello, piano, accordion, vibraphone, etc.) and arrangements. Adult pop for thinking people. (Aesthetics)
