King Kung

Smashin’ Glass/Breakin’ Hearts

BY Jon BartlettPublished Dec 1, 1999

King Kung’s debut album has garnered a fair amount of acclaim from worshippers in the church of sludge rock. Smashin’ Glass/Breakin’ Hearts presents us with some decent production swimming in a lagoon of distorted riffs and Eric Bachmann-like vocal gruffings. Like the Diodes and the Doughboys before them, King Kung filter out the bad and leave the ashes as good Canadian punks should. After a pretty heavy larynx workout, things settle down and the stone settles in, till things extinguish with “Johnny Gets His Bag ‘O’ Chips,” a little ditty that would bring a grin to Ozzy’s face.
