Kevin Drew

"Tbtf"

I'm not sure which I find more fascinating: hearing Broken Social Scene front-man Kevin Drew go it alone (though is he ever really alone?) or stare at him eating what I believe are Honey Nut Cheerios in his bathrobe while he watches pornography (or so those faint moans in the background suggest). Taken from his forthcoming "solo" album, Spirit If..., the first in the "Broken Social Scene Presents" series, "Tbtf" - which unfortunately does not stand for "Too big too fail" or "Tributyltin fluoride" but "Too beautiful to fuck," according to his lyrics - doesn't shy away from the BSS format: the groove is as loose as a goose, there are more layers than a white onion, an arty fit of noise interrupts in true form, and the hearty combo of horns, strings and vibes elevate it to a heavenly space. In one word it's "sweet," even when his vulnerable falsetto drops the f-bomb. Can't wait to hear the rest of his concept album on "fucking, fighting, fearing and hope."
