Swedish melancholic metal masters Katatonia have finally returned with their ninth studio album, Dead End Kings. After numerous lineup changes over the years, their first new record since 2009's Night Is the New Day sees core Katatonia members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström working with guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist. The result is a stellar album, which is available to stream in its entirety right here.
Dead End Kings is an artistic release that captures Katatonia's classic doom/gothic sound while incorporating new elements to create a fresh and innovative album, which Renkse describes in a statement as representing "progression and taking things to the next level."
"The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one," he continued. "I think that's the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved. We don't want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music."
