Jay Malinowski is well versed in reggae thanks to his work with Bedouin Soundclash, and now he's exploring another facet of Caribbean music by covering a tune by calypso artist Small Island Pride.
This cover of "Carnival Celebration #2" features Malinowski's Deadcoast and previous tourmate Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music). It's an acoustic number that finds Malinowski embracing the Caribbean sound and comes from Malinowski's oceanic concept album Martel, which is due out on February 11 via Pirates Blend/Sony.
Speaking of the track, Malinowski explained in a statement, "I started covering this Small Island Pride song on the Revival Tour in Europe with Chuck Ragan. In the journey of the Martel concept, it represents his landing in La Desirade in the French West Indies. Chuck happened to be in town with Hot Water Music when we were recording in Vancouver, he was going to sing on a different song that was more on the folk side, but when he laid down these vocals we were all shocked to find how good he sounds singing calypso!"
