If Japandroids were to find their spirit animal, it would definitely be a mule. For the last year, Brian King and Dave Prowse have spent nearly every waking hour on the road, and now it looks as though things aren't about to slow down for the Vancouver, BC-based duo.
On top of launching their brand new seven-inch singles series on April 13, Japandroids have (finally) announced a release date for the reissue of their first two out-of-print EPs.
Mastered by John Golden (Melvins, Nirvana), the two five-song recordings will be packaged together as a ten-track comp and titled No Singles. Polyvinyl Records will release the comp as a deluxe CD and 180-gram double gatefold vinyl LP, with packaging that includes a 32-page booklet (the vinyl version has an 11x11-sized insert) on May 11. It will also be out digitally.
In case you were unaware, before the band broke through with their 2009 debut album, Post Nothing, Japandroids were hard-working unknowns trying to make it in Vancity. During that time, they released two EPs (which got reviewed in Exclaim!): 2007's Lullaby Death Jams and 2008's All Lies.
Exclaim! got a hold of vocalist/guitarist King, who said of the reissue package, "It's already done, it's just being pressed and printed as we speak. The problem was that it looked as though it would be done at the same time as the first seven-inch, which comes out on April 13. So the label wanted to put a bit of distance between the compilation and the first two seven-inches, so we went with May."
King says that he put the finishing touches on all the artwork and packaging in the band's car on his computer during their 2009 fall tour.
As for those original EPs, which are still floating out there somewhere, King says some of the owners recognized their value soon as the band found buzz.
"They're a rare item now," says King. "As soon as we got reviewed on Pitchfork the first time and really started to get known outside of Vancouver, I immediately found a bunch of our EPs that I had mailed out to publications and radio stations on eBay. The listings were all like, 'Limited edition Japandroids EPs - $50!' I was so mad. All these poor kids who found a band they might like were being milked for CDs that I essentially mailed out for free."
